How can I make LARGE and CLEAR MSN Emoticons?

I FINALLY discovered how to make my own emoticons with gif images ( with UnFREEz). But turning my images into gif format distorts them so bad that by the time the image is turned into an emoticon they look HORRIBLE! I KNOW there HAS TO BE a way to make clear emoticons (and even animated ones too for that matter), but HOW?|||hey
