How do I make the background go away on custom emoticons?

I noticed that on msn (windows live messenger) you can make you own emoticons.

But when I do this in paint, there is always a white background behind the emoticon that I can't get rid of, so if someone's conversation background is not white, they will see a white box around my smilies.

This does not happen with the built in smilies.

How do I do it?

I have ms paint, and GIMP.|||try using the GIMP and make the background transparent.
