If a guy uses emoticons in his emails such as the happy face is there real meanning?

I've read in Interpersonal Communications that women are more likely to use emoticons in their emails than guys. Is there real meanning or not?|||The real meaning would be a smile. There is no hidden meaning. A smile is a smile. It's a positive, subtle thing.
