How does the emoticons key on the Motorola Rival work?

When you push it does a smiley face pop up? Or does a menu of all the smiley faces come up and you choose one?|||when u press the emoticons button a menu of smiley faces pop up and you pick one. (i think it is kinda cool)|||when u txt u can press that key and a gallery of smiley faces come up.
